Performance and 'Agency' Problems: An Empirical Investigation of 'March
Madness':
In this article the authors
address the idea of economic incentives as determining player performance in
tournaments. They provide two
examples of tournaments, the first being golf tournaments in which players
often play beyond their abilities because they are driven by large payoffs for
victory. Thus, the question they seek to answer is does the same
performance enhancement occur in amateur settings such as the NCAA tournament.
The conclusion reached is that lacking individual rewards and
incentives, that amateurs do not undergo the same increase in performance.
