
College Sports as Academic Prostitution
College sports are a business, a big business.
In a journal article entitled “Big-Time
Sports as Academic Prostitution,” William Dowling addresses the issue of
college sports impact on their famed universities as ‘academic
institutions’. Through the now accepted practices of corruption, deception,
and exploitation within a college sports program the idea of a student-athlete
is fading fast. In this study,
Dowling focuses on the discrepancies between student-athletes and non-athletes
and the ever-popular notion to pay college athletes.
