A LOOK AT TITLE IX AND WOMEN'S PARTICIPATION IN SPORT

In a report by Miller, Heinrich, and Baker they focused on two studies involving women’s interests in athletics.  The first study investigated whether the sport opportunities offered by the college matched the interests of the women students.  Thirty-six percent of the women studied said they were involved in either varsity or intramural sports.  The reason stated for not participating was primarily time constraint.

Do women have less interest in sport, thereby justifying the disproportionate number of athletic opportunities for men? Some sport administrators believe this to be true and base their opinion on rates of participation in sport by women.  The second study showed that men did indeed have a higher interest in sport (50% extremely interested, 32% somewhat interested) as compared to women (24% extremely interested, 50% somewhat interested).  Many argue however that this is a result of less opportunity for women athletes.

There was no regression run for this data.  It was only a survey to find the levels of interest in sports by males and females.
