Santa Maria Maggiore is considered one of the holiest basilicas in
Rome. On the outside, its structure is in the traditional style of Late
Antiquity. But inside, the church houses some of the most detailed and
elaborate mosaics of the period. The mosaics include the most detailed
depictions of the life of Moses up until this period, as well as some
intriguing portrayals of the Virgin Mary,
created just after her entitlement as the Mother of God. In
this page, I examine a diverse sampling of the
mosaics, discuss their significance stylistically and historically,
and offer some thoughts on the mosaics as a whole.
Use this index page as your guide, from the history of the church, to the
nave mosaics, to those in the triumphal arch.
